Psychotherapy Services

I have had the privilege of providing psychotherapy services to thousands of individuals from all walks of life and highly diverse backgrounds. For California residents, I offer solution-oriented psychotherapy based on proven cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and Depth Psychology (Jungian) approaches. I also specialize in helping people in mid- and later life navigate the many challenges and opportunities that often come with the "second act" of life.

Most importantly, I offer my clients a warm and highly empathetic approach while still holding them accountable to themselves. It is very important to me that my patients feel respected and hopeful. I want my patients to develop a strong sense of self-sufficiency and independence. I also want my patients to understand their past and how it “lives” with them in the present and guides their current thinking, feeling, and behavior. Sometimes therapy involves personality assessments which most clients enjoy.

I see patients 100% virtually over a HIPAA-client and completely confidential Zoom platform. Most of my clients are surprised by the intimacy and “immediacy” of online counseling, and, of course, this saves clients valuable travel time and travel expenses and allows them to remain in the comfort of their own homes or other desired physical space.

Please note that I do not see clients with significant mental health challenges such as schizophrenia, borderline and narcissistic personality disorders, eating disorders, etc., as these patients are better served by seeing a psychiatrist in a live, non-virtual setting.

Why I Do Not Accept Health Insurance

1. Most health insurance policies cover a minimal amount (if any), of counseling sessions. Though your Evidence of Coverage may list many “In-Network” providers, few of these providers actually accept that insurance (or are not accepting new patients) because in the end, they reimburse the mental health clinician so little.

2. Perhaps most importantly, no health insurance company can guarantee your privacy and confidentiality, even with HIPAA protections. Health insurance companies always require a diagnosis and will likely stay with your electronic health records for your lifetime. And in the age of AI-assisted data theft, your deeply personal health information is always at risk. If you wish, I am happy to provide you with a “super bill” invoice, with diagnoses as appropriate, to submit to your insurer as an “out-of-network” provider.

3. Finally, I don’t believe a “one-hour” therapy session should last only 45 or 50 minutes as many other clinicians do. My sessions are a full hour, if that’s what you desire, and not less.
